Golf Swing Tips to Cure the Dreaded Slice

Golf Swing Tips to Cure the Dreaded Slice are needed by almost all golfers at one time or another. Most of us have had a period where we started slicing the ball on almost every swing. In my case it got so bad that I was routinely hitting a “banana ball”! Scottish and Universal Newspapers has started a new fortnightly golf column on their LennoxHerald.co.uk website. In their first article, professionals David Muir and Colin Hendry give us a great drill and Golf Swing Tips to Cure the Dreaded Slice.

“For our first article we would like to address an issue that rears its ugly head more often than not – the dreaded slice!

Golf Swing Tips to Cure the Dreaded Slice

Before we begin, it is worth noting that there is no substitute for good quality coaching, as we all have individual swings and unique reasons for producing errant shots.

An incorrect swing path often causes the slice.

The path that the club takes on the downswing plays a critical role in determining the shape of the shot.

Slicers have a tendency to hit with an ‘out to in’ swing path. If you can imagine a straight line travelling from your ball to the hole, an out to in swing path is when the club travels towards the ball from outside this imaginary line.

After contact, the clubhead continues in this direction, cutting across the ball from right to left.

This makes the golf ball spin in a clockwise direction and travel left to right during its flight.

We need to ensure that we approach the ball from inside the line, contact the ball and then travel outside the line.

If done correctly this will produce a ball flight that travels right to left.

Here is a great tip to help you practice this new in to out swing path.

Place a tee in the ground approximately six inches behind the ball and two inches inside the line nearer your foot.

Now place another tee six inches in front of the ball and two inches outside the line.

Practice by swinging the clubhead over the tee at the rear, into the ball and over the tee at the front.

This should produce an in to out flight path.”
